Bio: Hello and welcome to my island! I write that because: 1. I live on one; 2. I love islands! Any kind of island and I've spent time on several. I have many things to share because my interests are as wide and varied as the ocean. I am a FOOL-osopher with a crazy, impish sense of humor. LIfe is like a diamond; mistakes are just lessons; everybody is different. Given this bit of information, my purpose with this blog is the share my perspective on the many facets of life as I've experienced it and what I've learned on my journey. Instead of putting a lot of that here, just read on and learn about where I've been, what I've learned and how I've lived. There could be unsolicited advice given, a crazy story told, a whimsical musing on one of my many interests. There will be photos, recipes and maybe even some cool tips for making your own life a little easier. Who knows? I would like to share these things with others in hopes that my written word either brings them up out of a low, inspires them in some way or perhaps helps with some dilemma they are currently in. Cat, we are kindred sisters indeed! In time, I will share my story of despair, forgiveness, hope and finally spiritual freedom, too! Just not yet. Hey Tom! Thanks, man! I still have A LOT yet to do…..This summer has been a real busy one so I haven’t been able to get to it. I’m going to try to get to your photos tomorrow. I had a really full week and weekend. Took hundreds of photos of the hydro race. I got to sneak down into the pits. There’s the fishing. Hubby caught two on Sunday morning within 20 minutes. Family is supposed to be in town on Wednesday and then, of course, the volunteering on Friday. I think I’m A LOT more busier in retirement than when I was working but it sure is great because its MY OWN! Stand by for the photos and thanks again for the feedback. Come visit again! I’ll be loading up more music, recipes, pearls ‘o wisdom , tips, stories, etc…..I gotta get a tablet…

Nope. It’s all about who I am! Registering the site was simple a savvy move for legal protection. I’m glad you enjoyed it. As the fall months roll into winter, etc….the site will be very, very dynamic. Many planned additions and more serious writing. I can post photos all day, but I also like to write. Thank you! I’m kind of a traditionalist when it comes to writing. With all of the technology out there (cell phones, tablets, etc…), I find formal writing becoming a lost art. I would like to preserve that. I don’t even care to learn to text! There is more to this site. Explore away and enjoy! Come again, often, because it is ever-growing!

I had the same issue when I started out. First, before deciding what theme you want to use, outline what you would like to do with your site. For example, I knew I wanted to write both short and lengthy posts. I haven’t gotten to the lengthy stuff yet because the requires concentrated time without interruption for me and I haven’t found the equilibrium. I continue to keep notes for that, though. Next, I’m a photographer so I wanted to be able to showcase my photo images. I love music, so I wanted to include that. I love to cook so there had to be something there, as well. With all of that in mind, I literally mapped out what I thought I should do with my site on a legal-sized tablet. Then, I took the tutorial that WordPress offers. Do that so you can learn what they have to offer.
Originally, I started out choosing a free theme. They have so many, and I did take time to peruse them all. When I got the hang of building my site, then, because I knew I would need storage space, went ahead and purchased a Premium theme which includes much needed storage for images, music and videos. I wanted something where I had room to grow. The image you see first when you come to my site is one of my own, as are all of the others. I also knew that simplicity is key. Folks don’t need to be distracted by tons of fancy bells and whistles. Although impressive, they can deter from what you want people to see. Start with research and education. Take the tutorial, plan out what you want to do with your site and then begin the build process. It can be tedious and you need to be open to adapt to alternatives if your original ideas aren’t quite what works.
You need patience, perseverance, a willingness to learn and discipline. A basic knowledge of computers and software helps.
In my world, the only stupid question is an unasked one and there isn’t such a thing as “off topic” when you want to learn something. That’s just streams of consciousness…..Good luck.

I am really loving the theme/design of your
weblog. Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility issues?
A handful of my blog visitors have complained about my blog not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Opera.
Do you have any advice to help fix this problem?

I think that with the different browser available and the difference between computer systems WILL cause some compatibility issues. I’m just a blogger and have not noticed any issues from my end. I.E. tends to have issues with A LOT of things. My advice to you is to use Chrome; not I.E. I do not use I.E. for anything. I find it a dog of a program. All patches and little functionality.

Thank you! I’ve been blogging since April of this year. I simply did the WordPress tutorial and learned to build my site using that and one of the many free themes they offered. I outgrew the free one and purchased and Premium theme that supports different media. I’ve learned that an overly flashy site can work against you and overwhelm the reader. Simple elegance is the way I choose to go. Keep it simple and pleasing to the eye. The images are all my own.

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids.
I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her
ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but
I had to tell someone!

I keep seeing this exact comment every now and again. The originator keeps using the word “fastidious.” I wonder IF this person even knows what that word means? Thanks! The only thing I can say is keep it simple. The more flash you add the slower things may get. Those ‘videos’ you refer to are actually just slide shows of my photos….I like that method of presenting them. It keeps the reader/viewer from having to actually scroll or click through a large series of them.

Thank for the compliment. My process for ‘centering’ begins with making sure I have as few distractions around me as possible. I get up very early in the morning, for now, because my spouse currently works third shift, so I’m by myself. I get a very nice cup of coffee, go through email, FB, and moderate comments on my site like the one you sent. That’s a nice warm up. Simple, casual correspondence is like warm up exercises before a good workout. With all of that out of the way, I get another cup of coffee and put on a nice playlist of mixed genre music and play a simple few games of Solitaire (I call it “sillytaire” because it’s a low key, no brainer activity) to totally clear my head of distracting thoughts and it allows me to decide what I want to accomplish on my site for the time being. Then, I just start working on posts. I haven’t gotten to the point of writing large page writings yet. Those are pieces that I work on over time….Always have a plan or direction….Point yourself there and let your heart and soul take it from there…..

Of course I get a lot of spam! I think anyone with accounts on the internet, whether it is email, a blog or some other account will receive spam. Do I have a fix to reduce it? No. None other that the spam area they go into and careful screening of it before I dispose of the real spam. It takes a clever eye to spot what isn’t from the incredibly amounts of spam that is. If you perused my site, you will have noticed a page I’ve posted that is also a post article that I expanded upon about spam. I recommend you read “Sir Spamalot.” It addresses what I’ve observed about spam and my thoughts on it.

Hello, I do believe your blog could possibly be having internet browser compatibility issues.
When I look at your site in Safari, it looks fine however when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping issues.

I’ve heard this before and did a little digging. If Safari works then stick with it. It isn’t my site; it’s Internet Explorer. It has compatibility issues with a lot of things. I haven’t used IE since the Windows 97 days because it is a giant PIG of a browser with just too much on it to be useful. I use Chrome with absolutely NO issues. Try that.

If you look just above that pretty photo of mine on the left, just below the tag line (“It’s all relative; ya gotta be real”), there is a tab labelled “Contact.” Click on that and it will open to give you that information. Thank you. Yes, I built this site myself through WordPress. I used their Mixfolio Premium theme and the images are my own. Explore it. Those tabs under that image have things there for you to look at and, hopefully, enjoy! That should help you to get some ideas. Also, WordPress has a free online tutorial to help you build your own site. Good luck!

Thank you! The theme is a Premium theme called Mixfolio from WordPress. They have a VAST selection of both FREE and Premium themes and are adding more all of the time. I customized it with my own images (I’m a photographer). WordPress also has a very nice online tutorial you can follow to learn to create your own website. My recommendation would be to take the tutorial using one of their free themes to learn by and then go from there. Always have a plan, first, on what you would like to do with your site. Good luck!

Thanks for the vote of confidence! Simplicity is key! I believe in the Keep It Simple Silly kind of Foolosophy. Simple elegance. Dolling up a site with all kinds of bells and whistles is cute but it tends to intimidate and put off folks when they visit. Besides, my tag line says it all. I have had folks comment about changing the tagline to something catchy but it is REALLY my Foolosophy! With all of the “reality” shows out on the tube that really aren’t “reality” and all of the technology available that purport to keep us better in touch with each other yet they keep us all at arms distance, it is essential to BE REAL! So, I am! Everything IS relative to everything else. It all flows and you have to be real about it. The balance is symbolic in keeping balance within your life. It’s all about setting examples and being real. The images are mine. When I’m not working my site, I’m out taking photos or doing art. I’m retired and have moved on to ventures I’ve dreamed of doing all of my adult life. I just want folks out there to realize that with direction, focus, discipline and keeping your dreams alive in your heart, YOU CAN realize those dreams in time. It requires patience and orchestration in getting there. NOTHING in life just simply FALLS into our laps and it shouldn’t because we won’t appreciate it as much as when we work for it. So….I employ the What You See Is What You Get concept. It’s all simply that.

To answer your question, no, not so far. Unfortunately, that is a reality we have to deal with. I try to remember to completely log off when I’m done working at my site and to change passwords regularly. That is all we can do. Don’t leave yourself wide open for hacking. When you are ready to leave your blog site, simply log off. Use challenging password and change them regularly. I’m a retired IT professional, who was involved extensively in network security, so I understand the importance of protecting things. Also, always backup your stuff. Always. It’s really that simple. Vulnerabilities are there because they are ALLOWED to be there. We can never be complacent.

Perhaps you used the same theme! I’m using WordPress’ Mixfolio. It’s simple and not too jazzy. As for colors, I tend to surround myself with hues of blues and greens. They are the colors of life and water. I’m an beachy sort of gal, so I like colors that relate to the sea. They are easy on the eyes and reflect calmness. We have more than enough stress in this world; a little calmness is necessary. Thank you so much!

Hi! Thank you! No, it does not take a lot of work to manage a website like this. In fact, it is very flexible. You can do it on your own time. It all depends on your goals. I recommend you take the tutorial course that WordPress has available to learn how to set up a site. I’m not a programmer, either, but I am a retired IT professional, so that helps a little. Anyone can learn how to do this! You just need to dedicate a little time in learning. Good luck and have fun!

No twitter account as of yet, but that isn’t out of the question. It’s just not high up on the priority list. I suppose I’ll get one soon enough. How much a blog costs depends on what you want to do with it and how much time and energy you want to invest in it. You can start a blog for free, if you want. I started out using a free theme and learning how to build my site through WordPress’ online tutorial. However, I knew I would need extra storage space for the media I want to include in my posts and I needed a theme that offered more flexibility. It depends on you. You just have to do your research.

I.E. has problems with A LOT of sites these days. I don’t use that browser anymore (haven’t for several YEARS now) because it is a cantankerous pig about sites. There is nothing I can do about that one! I’m a Chrome user! I have NOT TROUBLES loading any sites with that browser.

Hi! I am using WordPress’ format. As for security, that is something you have to practice consistently yourself. Just log off when you aren’t on your site. If you are getting spam, well, we all get that. I just clear that out very regularly. It’s all about management of your site, really. Everything in life has risk. Risk free? I’ve yet to find ANYTHING in life that is risk free.

WordPress is my web host. They have both, Premium and free themes to use. It all depends on you! Do their online tutorial and see what it is about, first. They actually walk you through planning and building your site. I keep things simple regarding my site. It’s the best way. Good luck in creating your own site.

Yes, I am using WordPress as my blog platform. Something to note: They have a nice little online tutorial for learning about building a website. That’s how I learned to build mine. Since a majority of the feedback I get indicates no problems viewing my site, my guess is it is your browser. IE is notorious for having problems with sites like these. Try using Chrome for your browser if you can. It is very compatible.

Well, lets’ see….I’m not a code person. The editor that WordPress has utilizes Visual and Text type editing. In the Text format, you can see the shortcodes and where they are with respect to the post. Visual is a very pretty look but neither rely on coding per se. It’s fairly WYSIWYG, like I am.

It’s a good course, gets me focused on things I hadn’t thought too much about, like branding, using Twitter etc.

I didn’t really give those things serious consideration either. But then again, for me, things like this take time and careful tending to grow. I’m not looking for instantaneous results. It’s like gardening. Carefully tend it and consistency is key. Too much in society, these days, is based on instant gratification. I’m not about that. So, this is my blog and if, over time, it becomes profitable, cool! But, it IS good to keep those points on the back burner for consideration, every now and again. On the thought of Twitter and those other social media avenues, I still need to learn more about them. I don’t have any mobile devices at this time. It’s just me and the tower, right now. There is thought for having maybe a tablet of something like that in the future; just not yet.

Thank you for your feedback. Yes, there are compatibility issues with IE. It has problems with many other sites. With all that is available out there like Chrome, I don’t know why folks still insist on using IE as their browser. There are no quick fixes for that other than to use a different browser for viewing. I don’t shoulder the problems of software issues from proprietary software giants like Microsoft. Their browser has just gotten too big and too patched up for its own good. Use Chrome. The the fix.

If you have the storage to upload via WordPress’ media manager, just upload through there. Then, you can grab a music player widget by going to Appearance, then selecting Widgets and scrolling through them. I hope this helps.

Long time supporter, and thought I’d drop a comment.
Your wordpress site is very sleek – hope you don’t
mind me asking what theme you’re using? (and don’t mind if I steal it?
:P)
I just launched my site –also built in wordpress like yours– but the theme slows (!) the site down quite a bit.
In case you have a minute, you can find it by searching for “royal cbd” on Google (would appreciate any feedback) – it’s still in the works.
Keep up the good work– and hope you all take care of yourself during the coronavirus scare!

The theme I’m using is Mixfolio. I’ve not changed the theme since I built this site about 8 or 9 years ago. The photo is one I took near my home.

The COVID-19 thing doesn’t scare me but I am adhering to the social distancing thing.
