While out and about exploring, I decided to visit Bowman Bay located on Fidalgo Island, just north of Deception Pass Bridge. Fidalgo Island is the northerly neighbor to Whidbey Island. While there, taking photographs of the splendid beauty of the cove, I saw a ketch-rigged vessel pull along the pier there. Immediately, I made a beeline for the pier, eager to get up close and personal to this fine looking vintage wooden yacht. Folks were loading stores and getting situated aboard. It was obvious the boat was preparing for a cruise. Candidly, I asked the person I deemed to be the Captain permission to photograph his vessel. He proudly nods and tells me to “shoot away!” The subject of interest? The SV Cutty Sark. The Captain is John Colby Stone. I give him my business card so he understands what I am about. Cutty Sark is a fifty foot classic Ketch built of teak by American Marine in Hong Kong, Japan. She was built in 1957 and is number one (her sails announce that with the number 1 prominently displayed on her mainsails) of ten. She proudly does educational charters, carrying students throughout the San Juan Islands at no charge.
